Client Blog: Richard's 60th birthday African safari surprise

I wanted to surprise my husband, Richard, with a memorable travel experience to celebrate his 60th birthday.

An African safari adventure is something we have always wanted to do, but I didn’t know where to start, let alone keep it secret!

Fortunately, a friend introduced me to Jo, and after an initial call to discuss the idea, we connected immediately, and she took care of everything.

We are busy people with a full-on family life, too. It was a huge relief to have the confidence that everything was being looked after.

Our five nights in the heart of the Masai Mara's great plains were incredible.

After a night in Nairobi and a transfer by light aircraft, we stayed at Little Governor’s Camp within the Governor’s Camp complex, Africa’s first permanent luxury tented camp.

It is nestled in the riverine forest along the winding banks of the Mara River, accessible only by boat, and was where Meryl Streep and Robert Redford stayed while filming Out of Africa!

Renowned for offering some of the best game and bird viewing in Kenya, we loved it.

The camp was excellent, with spacious and comfortable classic safari-style tents with en-suite bathrooms and a private veranda to enjoy the beautiful views.

Being situated by a marsh water hole meant an abundance of amazing animals, including hippos, turned up around the camp at night; during the days, elephants and warthogs roamed freely around, as they do!

During our time there, we enjoyed the spectacular wildlife and scenery, day and night game drives, and Richard's wonderful surprise gift from our kids, an awesome balloon ride over the Masai Mara.

The second part of the trip was spent with some much-needed relaxation and laid-back luxury at the all-inclusive Emerald Zanzibar Resort & Spa on Zanzibar Island, the main island in the Tanzanian archipelago.

Jo, thank you so much for helping make Richard’s special birthday trip memorable, and for saving me lots of time and hassle. Fantastic job. 😊
